Impulse 82: Lisa 82 – “New Beginnings, Part 1” Recap and Reflections
Some episodes move the plot forward. Others change the rules of the whole story. “New Beginnings, Part 1” does both, and it hits hard. Here’s what happened and what I think it all means.
The Night Everything Comes Back
Clay finally remembers the night he was paralyzed. In a flash he sees Lisa 82 teleporting from his truck, crushing him in the process. His first words to her say it all: “You paralyzed me.”
Lisa 82’s reply is cold and simple: “I just saved you.”
Both of them may be telling the truth. She hurt him, and she may also have pulled him out of something worse. The show leaves that tension sitting there, and it’s what makes their conflict interesting.
Clay Loses His Shield
Furious, Clay threatens to expose her: “You are a monster. I am going to tell everyone what you are.”
But Lisa 82 is disappointed that her rescue earned her this reaction, and she fires back with a speech that shifts the balance of power. The Boone name no longer protects him:
- His dad is in jail after the DEA caught him for drug trafficking.
- His brother is on the run for the murder of Amos Miller.
- Clay himself has no one left to hide behind.
She finishes with a faint smile and the line that stings most: nobody will believe him.
The smile is the scariest part. Earlier Lisa 82 seemed to want to avoid conflict. Here she’s using her enemy’s collapse as a weapon.
The Clay Problem
Clay is now a real problem for the team, and the group disagrees about what to do with him:
- Townes thinks Clay should join the team.
- Lisa 82 wants him gone.
The irony is that Lisa 82 doesn’t actually need to fear exposure. A paralyzed boy from a disgraced family claiming his classmate can teleport sounds like a wild story, and she knows it. So her push to get rid of him seems to be about more than safety. It feels personal.
Teleportation Gets a Free Pass
My favorite idea in the episode is a quiet one. Clay asks Jenna whether she knew all along that Lisa 82 could teleport. Then he asks how she can be so calm about Lisa 82 crushing his legs.
In real life, someone crushing another person’s legs would be horrifying. But a superpower seems to change how everyone judges it. When the harm comes from something amazing, people tend to excuse it.
The show asks a pointed question: do powers make people see each other differently, or just make it easier to look past the damage? Clay is the walking reminder that the damage was real.
The Money Runs Out
The FBI seizes all of Bill Boone’s property and assets, including the bowling alley where Jenna’s stepdad works. Suddenly Jenna’s family has no income and no idea how they’ll get by.
It’s a good reminder that the Boone empire’s fall hurts innocent people too, not just the Boones.
Jenna’s Fears Pile Up
Jenna sits down with Lisa 82 to lay out their problems, and they’re heavy:
- If Nikolai doesn’t come back, he may be dead, which would make Jenna a murderer.
- If Nikolai is alive, he now knows where they live and could come for them.
Either way, someone is in danger. Jenna even starts wondering whether she will die and what she should do before she does. It’s a vulnerable moment that gives the episode some emotional weight.
Two Ways of Living
The episode closes with a quiet conversation between the two girls. Lisa 82 says she’s different from Jenna because she doesn’t care much about what people think of her. She explains that moving around and living in different places does that to a person.
It adds depth to Lisa 82. Her cold edge may come from a life with no roots rather than from being heartless. Jenna, who has stayed in one place, cares deeply about how others see her. Their different backgrounds explain a lot about how they react to the same crisis.
Final Thoughts
“New Beginnings, Part 1” is about consequences: for Clay’s legs, for the Boone family, for Jenna’s household, and for Lisa 82 herself. The “new beginnings” in the title feel bittersweet, since every fresh start here comes from something being lost.
Questions I’m taking into Part 2:
- Will Clay join the team or become an enemy?
- Is Nikolai alive?
- How long can Lisa 82’s confidence last if she’s carrying a possible death on her conscience?
