In the December 22, 1959 One Step Beyond episode “Make Me Not a Witch,” farm girl Emmy Horvath discovers she can read minds and learns how thin the line is between miracle and curse. Her parents treat the gift as if “crazy” and “witch” were the same word, warning her never to tell anyone or they will come take her away to an asylum; she even prays, “Make me not a witch.” The story answers that fear with a harder claim: if God can make the stones cry out the truth, he can give a person the power to read minds. Two children are missing, and the half-hour turns on whether she will hide what she can do to stay safe—or use it, and risk being called a witch, rather than let them die. Host John Newland closes with the line that still hangs over it: “How really terrifying if there were no miracles.”
