A Video Game Simulation? Go Away, Go Away, Go Away!

The idea that we might be living in a sophisticated simulation isn’t new, but it continues to captivate imaginations and spark debates across various disciplines. Drawing parallels to video games might help us understand this concept better. In many video games, environments are only “rendered” or fully detailed when a player is present to observe them. This economizes computational resources, prioritizing only the elements that the user interacts with directly. When the player moves on, these details often vanish or are significantly reduced to save energy and processing power.

I say, “Don’t say that! Don’t say that..God.”.

There are many rooms in my Father’s house.

This leads us to question the nature of our own reality. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound—or more fundamentally, does it even exist in full form at that moment? Applying this to our universe, could it be that only the parts of the world we are observing directly are fully ‘rendered’? This notion could explain why the universe seems so incredibly energy-efficient. The physical reality, as vast and complex as it is, might operate on principles similar to a simulation, reserving full detail and energy only for events that are directly observed.

And that’s when you found me. I was waiting in the Garden.

This theory aligns curiously well with how we experience the world. All our interactions and perceptions of the environment are ultimately processed through electrical and chemical reactions in our brains. What we see, hear, and feel are all interpretations of data rather than direct interactions with a tangible reality.

If we entertain the hypothesis that we might be in a simulation, several compelling arguments arise. The immense energy and computing power required to continuously render every part of an infinitely expanding universe would be staggering. Perhaps, like in a video game, our universe conserves its resources by rendering only what is necessary for the ‘players’—us, in this case—to perceive.

While this theory might sound like science fiction, it poses serious philosophical and scientific implications. Are we the observers of the universe, or are we being observed? If our reality is indeed a simulation, understanding its rules and its nature could be the most important exploration humanity has ever undertaken. The simulation theory encourages us to question the very foundations of reality and our place within it, pushing the boundaries of what we consider possible.
