Bear McCreary’s “All Along The Watchtower” Music Video

In an age of satellites orbiting Mars and chat messages sent back and forth between them, Battlestar Galactica’s “All Along The Watchtower” by Bear McCreary seems relevant and worth a good listen.

Indeed, one can wonder about man’s purpose when listening to these lyrics.

“There must be some kind of way outta here. Said the joker to the thief. There’s too much confusion. I can’t get no relief,” sings the singer.

Are we just here to work aka slave as the lyrics say?

“Business men, they drink my wine. Plowman dig my earth. None were level on the mind. Nobody up at his word. Hey, hey,” wonders the singer.

Surely, life cannot be a joke as the singer states?

“No reason to get excited. The thief he kindly spoke. There are many here among us. Who feel that life is but a joke,” the singer points out.

The singer offers some kind of hope.

“But, uh, but you and I, we’ve been through that. And this is not our fate. So let us stop talkin’. falsely now. The hour’s getting late, hey,” says the singers.

Obviously, something “bigger” is going on, which the singer hints.

“All along the watchtower. Princes kept the view. While all the women came and went. Barefoot servants, too,” the singer tells us.

Whatever it is, it’s coming to a head as the song says.

“Outside in the cold distance. A wildcat did growl. Two riders were approaching. And the wind began to howl,” warns the singer.

Ironically, the singer lyrics refer to a bible verse. Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21, verses 5-9 reads:

“Set the table and arrange the seats! Eat and drink! Get up, you princes, anoint the shield. For this is what Jehovah said to me: ‘Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees.’ And he saw a war chariot with a team of horses, A war chariot of donkeys, A war chariot of camels. He watched carefully, with great attentiveness. Then he called out like a lion: ‘Upon the watchtower, O Jehovah, I am standing constantly by day, And I am stationed at my guardpost every night. Look at what is coming: Men in a war chariot with a team of horses!’ Then he spoke up and said: ‘She has fallen! Babylon has fallen! All the graven images of her gods he has shattered to the ground!'”

Here, the bible verse talks about “false religion” and it’s destruction.

In the end, Starbuck takes a leap of faith and enters the black hole and comes out on the other side of the universe: Caprica. Today, we send chat messages back and forth on Mars between our satellites and one day might build temples on the red planet. It’s an interesting song and video.
