What the townspeople learn
After dark, nothing outside is “help.” The creatures can copy any face or voice—including people you loved who’ve died. If you believe them and open the door, you’re dead. That’s the rule.

How newcomers figure it out
New arrivals keep bumping into the impossible: friendly voices outside windows, people who look exactly like rescuers. But in this town, anyone outside at night is a monster wearing a mask.

Their tactics
The creatures don’t just attack; they manipulate. You might be sitting in your car and hear a laugh nearby. They know you’re there and pretend not to—waiting for you to make the mistake of letting them in. That’s when they kill.

Why help doesn’t come
Traditional protections fail. A priest’s faith can’t stop them. A sheriff’s gun can’t hurt them. The usual ways of feeling safe don’t work here.

Kenny’s key observation
After his dad is killed, Kenny notices something chilling: the monsters only walk. They never run. It’s like they know time and terrain are on their side—herding people like chess pieces until there’s nowhere left to go.

Survival rules, the short list

  • After dark, no one outside is real help.
  • Don’t open doors or windows for voices—or for familiar faces.
  • If you hear them, do nothing that invites them in.
  • Remember: they walk, but they win by patience.

That’s “the way things are now”: a town trapped under rules designed by predators who never need to hurry.
